RESCUE OPERATION OF STRANDED FISHERMEN BY INDIAN COAST GUARD DURING CYCLONE ‘OCKHI’

On 05 Dec 17, ICGS Samrat rescued 15 fishing boats with 184 fishermen near Bitra Island north of Lakshadweep Island out of which 13 fishing boats belong to Tamil Nadu state. 40 Kochi fishing boats alongwith 516 fishermen from Trivandrum/Kochi have taken safe shelter at Veraval. 130 fishing boats have taken shelter at Devgarh while 40 fishing boats have taken shelter in Jaigarh harbour. Details of the fishing boats being ascertained. CG Dornier sorties was tasked off Goa, New Mangalore & Kochi to date. ICGS Vaibhav continuing search off Kerala Coast, ICGS Aadesh continuing search off Tuticorin Coast and ICGS Abhiraj sailed from Tuticorin harbour with
07 fishermen embarked onboard for search of missing fishermen in the cyclone affected areas at sea. CG Dornier from Chennai launched along Tamil Nadu coast to alert & sensitise the fishing boats/ fishermen to return harbour view developing system in Bay of Bengal. The operation is being assisted by ICGS Rani Abbakka and ICGS Rani Durgavati. Presently 03 ICG Ships of Eastern Region are continuing with search and rescue operation off Kanyakumari /Kerala coast. Total of 183 lives have been saved so far. Total of 24 ICG Surface assets, 03 CG Aircraft and 02 CG Helo are carrying out search and rescue operations off Tamil Nadu/ Kerala/ Karnataka/ Maharashtra Lakshadweep/ Minicoy coast.
