Fortis Malar Hospital Conducts Technically Challenging MICS (Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery)
35-year-old daily wage worker successfully undergoes cardiac surgery under CM Health Scheme
Chennai, 20th February, 2020: Fortis Malar Hospital recently performed a one of its kind minimally invasive Mitral Valve Replacement Procedure on 35-year-old Mahalakshmi, an underprivileged daily wage worker hailing from Thiruvallur district. This procedure was performed by an expert team of doctors led by Dr. Madhu Shankar, Senior Consultant, Adult CTVS (Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery), Fortis Malar Hospital, Dr. Anto Sahayaraj R, Senior Consultant, Adult CTVS (Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery), Fortis Malar Hospital and Dr. Kirthivasan- Cardiac anesthetist, Fortis Malar Hospital. This life saving surgery was covered under Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme.
Ms. Mahalakshmiwas admitted to Fortis Malar Hospital with complaints of swelling of the feet, breathlessness and palpitation. Post evaluation, she was diagnosed with Aortic valve stenosis (narrowing of the heart valve) and was taken up for cardiac surgery. Due to high lung pressures and calcification of valve leaflets, the team of doctors decided to do a mitral valve replacement procedure. This minimally invasive procedure was performed by making a small incision on the right side of the chest without dividing the sternum (breastbone). The surgery was successful and the patient recovered quickly.
Commenting on the procedure, Dr. Madhu Shankar added saying “Mitral Valve Replacement when done through a minimal invasive procedure requires technical expertise. This minimally procedure has numerous advantages as it causes less blood loss, does not leave a big scar, causes less pain and aids in early recovery. Improved anesthesia techniques and advanced surgical instruments have paved way for such simple cardiac procedures thus resulting in speedy recoveries.”
Speaking on the surgery, the patient Mrs Mahalakshmi expressed saying “I am grateful to have benefited from the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Health Care Scheme and get treated by the team of Expert Cardiac Specialists at Fortis Malar Hospital. I was able to walk next day immediately after my procedure and get back to my regular routine in no time.”
