Young talent honoured Indian Fine Arts Society’s 93rd annual Music Competition
Legacy of Carnatic Music is in
safe hands, speakers laud youth

Speakers lauded the talent of young girls and boys for their efforts and pursuit of excellence in Carnatic Music, while stating the youth were making a significant contribution to nurture traditional music in its purest form.
They made this observation during the prize distribution event of Indian Fine Arts Society’s 93rd annual Music Competition and Muthuswami Dikshithar Day Celebrations held at Ethiraj Kalyana Mandapam in Alwarpet on Friday evening.
Ms. Chitra Parthasarathy, Director and Chief Financial Officer, i Solve Technologies, was the Chief Guest and handed over prizes to young girls and boys. The contests were held in various categories – classical vocal, Azhwar Pasurams, Tiruppugazh, Pancharatna Krithis, Subramania Bharati’s poems, instrumental – veena, violin, mridangam, in addition to varnam. Over 50 young girls and boys, some as young as 12 years of age, were among those who received the prizes.
Ms. Parthasarathy said it was her great fortune that her family was able to contribute to the efforts of Indian Fine Arts Society to promote Carnatic music. She praised IFAS and its management for their voluntary efforts for organising competitions for youth on such a scale every year. She also congratulated the prize winners, and appealed to the youth to continue to pursue excellence in Carnatic music.
In his presidential address, Mr. K.V. Ramachandran, President, IFAS, said they took great pleasure in promoting budding artists, whom they firmly believed would endeavour to take classical music to greater heights and that IFAS took every chance to promote young talent.
A book ‘iraiva ennullaththe’ authored by Dr. A. Manoharan, was also launched on the occasion. Dr. K.S. Radhakrishnan, Honorary Secretary, welcomed the gathering. Mr. Venkat Rangam, Vice President, IFAS, was also present.
The prize distribution event is the culmination of several months of planning by IFAS, with active participation by young and budding musicians from all over Tamil Nadu Preliminary events were held from September onwards, and after shortlisting of candidates, the finals was held recently where the winners were selected by a jury comprising eminent Vidwans and Vidhushis.
The event included rendition of Krithis composed by Muthuswamy Dikshithar by vocalists Ms. Varshini and Ms. Vardhini accompanied by Ms. H. Medha on violin, and Mr. Thillaisthanam R. Suriyanarayanan on the Mridangam, and then by Dr. Brindha Manickavasakan on Veena, accompanied by Mr. S.P. Anantha Padmanabhan on the violin and Mr. Neyveli K.V. Ramkumar on the mridangam.
