*Chennai Doctors Perform Emergency High-Risk Surgery to Treat Rare Aortic Dissection in Young IT Professional*
*Chennai, March 23, 2026:* Doctors at Prashanth Hospitals recently managed a critical cardiac emergency involving a 39-year-old IT professional who was diagnosed with Type A Aortic Dissection, a rare and life-threatening condition requiring immediate surgical intervention.
The patient, with no known history of cardiac illness, presented to the emergency department with sudden onset severe chest pain and significantly elevated blood pressure. The nature of pain, described as sharp and radiating towards the back, prompted clinicians to investigate beyond a routine cardiac event. Further clinical assessment revealed differences in pulse and blood pressure between the arms, a cardiac murmur, and imaging findings suggestive of a widened mediastinum. Rapid bedside echocardiography raised suspicion of a tear in the ascending aorta, which was subsequently confirmed through advanced imaging.
Aortic dissection affects an estimated 3–4 individuals per million annually, but carries a high risk of complications including rupture, stroke, and organ damage if not treated promptly. Recognising the urgency, the cardiac team activated emergency surgical protocols and proceeded with a complex aortic repair procedure to replace the affected segment with a vascular graft and restore normal blood flow.
In this case, the surgical team performed a Modified Bentall Procedure, a highly specialised intervention used in select high-risk aortic emergencies. This major heart surgery involves replacing the aortic valve, aortic root, and ascending aorta using a graft, along with reimplantation of the coronary arteries. The procedure uses the “coronary button technique,” where small portions of tissue containing the coronary arteries are carefully removed and attached to the graft, ensuring a safer and more secure repair.
