The celebration will begin at Koyambedu with a cake-cutting ceremony to mark the arrival of Madras Day. Participants will then board the metro, with the musical performance beginning inside the moving train as it makes its journey towards the Airport and back to Koyambedu.
The event is being offered free of charge to Chennaiites, with the idea of creating a celebration that is accessible to citizens and, more importantly, delivers an experience the city has never seen before.
The response has already been overwhelming. Registrations for “Metro-vil Madras Day” closed within just 30 minutes of opening, with an extraordinary response from Chennaiites eager to be part of this unique celebration.
Speaking about the initiative, Mr. Ranjeeth Rathod, Managing Director, Super Chennai, said:
“Madras Day is about celebrating our city, its people and everything that makes Chennai special. We wanted to create an experience that was not just another event, but something people would remember. A midnight metro ride, live music, and Chennaiites coming together to welcome Madras Day felt like the perfect way to do it. We are delighted to partner with CMRL on this first-of-its-kind experience. The overwhelming response within just 30 minutes of opening registrations is a wonderful reflection of the love Chennaiites have for their city and their enthusiasm to celebrate it in new and meaningful ways.”
“Metro-vil Madras Day” brings together three elements that are integral to the contemporary identity of Chennai: its people, its public transport and its music.
As the metro travels through the city at midnight, the celebration will offer participants a unique perspective of Chennai while creating a memorable collective experience to welcome another Madras Day. For one night, the metro will become more than a means of getting from one place to another. It will become a moving celebration of Chennai.
The initiative also reflects the shared intent of Super Chennai and CMRL to create meaningful public experiences around the city, while celebrating Chennai’s culture, identity and evolving urban landscape.
With a live contemporary Chennai band performing inside a moving metro, citizens coming together at midnight and the city marking Madras Day in an entirely new setting, Metro-vil Madras Day promises to be a celebration that is as unique as the city itself.
