Happy Testimonial from Preterm Mom
Hello i am Nandhini, mother of a preterm baby who was born at 29 weeks with less than a kg birth weight. this was my second baby and it was a c section. immediately post delivery my son was taken to Mehta hospital for NICU care , for the first few days due to various complications he had , his feed was on hold. once his feed started i was asked to give express milk . thats when my first challenge started. i was not able to express more than 20 ml in single pumping session and it infact reduced to 5 ml in few days, maybe because of the too much stress i had. hand expressing was much better compared to pumping. i was so frustrated that i couldnt provide milk to my son that i started thinking that my milk supply is gone. but when i consulted lactation doctor Jayashree Jayakrishnan, she told me that i have adequate milk supply and just that pumping doesn’t denote the lactation we have. once the baby starts feeding directly from breasts, the issue will be gone is what she assured me. meanwhile she asked me to pump once in every two hours to maintain the milk supply irrespective of the output. at that moment though her inference was soothing, i will again get frustrated when i couldn’t express milk. I infact thought at one point that lactation doctor is lying to me and indeed my milk supply is low. i dint believe her words and thought she is physiologically treating me. i forced her to prescribe galactogogues me and i started consuming any food or drink that people say would increase milk supply. i started pumping every two hours like mad. i even tried power pumping. still i saw no improvement in my pumping output. i used to get the same 5ml or 6ml per session. then when my son reached 1.2 doctors gave him for NNS. with that slowly things started to change. post NNS i was able to express little better than before and that gave me confidence. i used to try NNS before every pumping session once discharged to home and gradually i saw my milk output was increasing. i was so stubborn in giving him only mother’s milk and dint want to quit breastfeeding and so i started feeding him directly from breasts along with paladai feeds when he reached 1.5. thats when i saw vast improvement in my milk expressing. i was able to express close to 30 ml per session once i started direct feeding. it then gradually increased to 50-60 ml and i reduced my pumping frequency. at one point of time i was able to express close to 150 ml during early morning pumping. And now, finally after 2.5 months of struggle, i succeeded this breastfeeding war and my son is completely into exclusive breastfeeding and no more expressing. also i would proudly say that he was never given formula. throughout this entire challenging period, my whole family, lactation doctor and nurse Tamizhlarasi , my son’s NICU doctor Dr Lakshmi all were very supportive and helped me to win this battle. if not for them I would have quit breastfeeding long back. thanks to them for their complete support.
